We left WVH at 10am and headed for Barry, not the Island this time, but Romilly Park, and more precisely Park Road, 10 of us in all.
We began the walk, but soon stopped to read an information board about Barry Castle, now a Grade II* listed ruin. The castle’s gatehouse, with its ogival portal and Gothic window is well-preserved along with walls on the north and east sides, as well as an arrow slit, can still be observed according to Google anyway.
Continuing toward Marine Drive with very nice houses and splendid views, we were soon entering Cliff Wood and the Golden Stairs or Steps, thankfully heading down and not up, we were soon in Porthkerry Park and time for a short break.
The next part of the walk took us into woods and a steep climb, but well worth the effort eventually arriving at the Bulwarks, once an Iron Age Fort and also occupied during the Roman period.
Entering Porthkerry Caravan Park we then headed along the lanes very close to the Porthkerry Viaduct and St Curigs Church, where we stopped and entered the church that dates back to the pre-Norman period.
It was now time to head toward the woods again and a steep descent toward our destination, Cafe Mateo for a well-earned break. Half an hour or so later we cut across the fields and again entered Cliff Wood and a very pleasant ascent and back to our cars and the end of a very enjoyable walk.
