Llantwit Major, 17th July

After a blustery weekend and the sad postponement of the village fete, the question confronting us on the Monday was “would the rain and wind effect our walk too” while looking mildly threatening ten of us, unperturbed, headed off to the beach at Llantwit Major to start our walk. Despite one short shower the day and walk proved to be most enjoyable.

After parking our cars, we took the steps behind the café and headed along the Cwm Col-Huw, across fields, passing the Dovecote, tithe barn and the gatehouse.

Arriving at St Illtyds Church (refuted to be the oldest in Wales) where we made a brief stop taking time out to see the Galilee chapel, which is now home to many Celtic stones. The East Chapel retains its stone benches and medieval wall paintings, including a likeness of Mary Magdalene, St. Christopher, dated around 1400AD and a royal coat of Arms to James 1st dated 1604.

We also met our local Vicar, Graig Vaughan who gave us considerable amount of his time to talk with us. Moira found a grave in the church grounds which was for an “Evan Christopher” which I shall check out and see if he was in anyway an ancestor.

We sheltered for a very short while for the only rain we encountered to pass, before heading down hill to the Cwm Col-Huw and a pleasant amble along the Avon Cwm Col-Huw back to the car park.

We had coffee/tea and some light refreshments before heading back. A nice day and as always great company and easy banter.
