Pontrhydyfen, 5th August

Antoni, the Met Office’s first named storm of the year, did not deter the six Wanderers who assembled at The Village Hall though it did force a change of plan. It was agreed that a preliminary two mile walk in preparation for the grand breakfast extravaganza would be too long in the adverse conditions so a shorter route was chosen instead.

Into the cars and off along rain sodden roads to Pontrhydyfen we drove. Wet weather gear donned we left Rhyslyn carpark to cross the aqueduct and arrived at Bethel Chapel just as the proprietor was opening the door promptly at ten a.m. After hanging up our jackets and ordering we settled at our table to await the promised feast and we were not disappointed as the photos show.

I have to say that the appetites of my petite companions put my poor effort to shame! The staff – actually the owners of the now redundant chapel – couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful which made the whole experience delightful.

The venue is heartily recommended with an extensive menu of snacks, light lunches, tea, coffee and cakes as well as the various breakfasts.

At about midday, fortified by good food, sparkling conservation and great humour and with offerings for absent friends, we left and retraced our steps back to the cars in brief, warming sunshine.
