Garw Valley, 22 July

Grey skies and drizzle found ten Monday walkers prepared to brave the low cloud condition forecast for the walk at the top of the Garw valley to Parc Calon Lan

The forecast was correct, but did not quash the enthusiasm for this mini adventure which took us along the path fringed with significant plant life, to include beautiful buddleia and the invasive Himalayan Balsam. We walked alongside two lakes and a cascading stream/ river which accompanied us to Parc Calon Lan which has been created on the site of a previous coal mine.

The park backdrop of mountains and forestry, with tops shrouded with by low cloud, provided a tranquil setting which some of us shattered with a rendering of the song ‘Calon Lan’!

The lyrics to the song were written in the 1980s by Daniel James; the tune composed by John Hughes. It was first performed at the Blaengarw Hotel, hence the naming of the park.

We left the park to retrace our steps, stopping at the Garw Valley Cafe where we were provided with food, drink and chat with locals.

Refreshed we returned to respective cars, said our goodbyes and headed back down the valley.

Thanks to all for the excellent company.
