Ever the opportunist, when Monica mentioned she was coming on her first Wick Wander, I asked if she would be co leader. As I was unable to be at the usual meeting point of Wick Village hall at 10am, Monica stepped in and I was delighted to see her and 15 other walkers all waiting for me at our walk starting point at CF61 Community Centre in Llantwit Major.
After a quick look at their festively decorated gardens (recent winners of the National Award for Community Engagement, Wales in Bloom), set off through the old town. We admired the Christmas decorations in the square, Town Hall, War Memorial, remarked on the row of lovely old shops being brought back to life and read a few historic blue plaques as we passed by.
Next stop was St Illtyd’s Church with a loop around the graveyard and into the back of the church, entering via The Galilee Chapel which houses The Celtic Stones. A first visit for some, but for others there is always something new to discover. For me this was a memorial window , and handrail dedicated to John George Kibblewhite. Although depicted as a knight in shining armour a local tragedy of just over a century ago. Monica was sent up the steps to read us the memorial wording. My co leader was being kept busy!

Back outside we headed through the more residential part of Llantwit, admiring the cottages with a fair bit of reminiscing of what used to be. After crossing the Hoddnant, we headed up the farm lanes to our destination, Acorn Farm Campsite Cafe.
The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and all 17 of us were very soon settled by the log burner with our refreshments. We could have stayed all day, but after a gentle nudge from Craig we completed the circular walk with a short detour to view The Wallowing Pool- all that remains of Ham Manor apart from Lodge Cottage.
As ever, thanks to all who joined the walk, especially Joy (just re-joined the group) and Monica.
Hope you enjoyed!
