Merthyr Mawr, 26th July

Fifteen Wick Wanderers set off from our car parking point close to Portobello House, above the River Ogmore.  We headed inland, first following a sandy path through the bracken, then along a pavement until we turned left to cross the fields to Merthyr Mawr.  The route led us over the rivers of Ewenny and Ogmore with a beautiful view back to Ogmore Castle in the distance.

It wasn’t long before we reached the village with its quaint thatched cottages and had a photo call in front of one. Although a horse and rider passing in front made a much amusing shot!  We headed around the back of the houses, a very pretty route, but especially to see the little Shetland pony and his donkey companions. Craig also spotted the peacock watching us from a distance.

Our destination was reached – St Teilo’s, Merthyr Mawr and its delicious pop-up Tea Event. It was great to support the fundraiser, whilst sitting in the sun enjoying very tasty cakes and refreshments. What wasn’t there to like?

Then a first for the group: we split into The Longies, and The Shorties. Bridget led the Shorties back towards Ogmore. Myself and the Longies headed down the lane to Candleston Castle, across the sandy path at the foot of the dunes, then up and over a grassy hill and fields back down to Merthyr Mawr. Views were spectacular, and on reaching the last stile spotted a lady putting out the most beautiful bouquets of home-grown flowers. A few of us were almost tempted to buy but decided probably not a good idea for walkers on what was now quite a hot afternoon.

A message came through to say The Shorties were back home. The Longies happily could reply that they were back at The Tea Event !!! We did eventually make it back. Thank you to all who joined Bridget and myself on our walk. Great company, scenery, weather, walking (3 or 5 miles) and cakes.
