Port Talbot, 27 January

Seven Wanderers braved the buffeting winds to walk the Promenade at Aberavon beach.

Having, with some challenge, paid for car parking, we set off from the west end of the Prom, admiring the stretch of beach toward the Port Talbot docks where the three docks cranes are majestically silhouetted against the sky.

According to a kind passing photographer these icons of industry are to be taken down in the very near future.

The high breaker waves make this three-mile-long beach popular with surfers, although non to be seen on this blustery morning!

1940’s 50’s and 60’s this ‘bucket and spade’ beach was a popular resort for families from the South Wales Valleys. Since the late 1990’s, the area has been upgraded to encourage increased tourism.

Coffee time was calling as the seven windblown walkers reached the end of the promenade; we retraced our steps to the warmth of a welcoming cafe where chatter and laughter continued; various hot drinks etc were purchased.

Having enjoyed the ‘coffee’ break, the group descended the steps to the beach, completing the walk to the car park, on the sands.

Thank you everyone for your great company; I look forward to our next walk.
