Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoirs to Roath Park, 10th January

Firstly, a warm welcome to Marilyn who recently joined the group and also welcome home to Richard who had overcome jet lag to join the walk.

Ten Wanderers met at WVH to arrange car sharing to Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoirs just north of Cardiff. What3words navigated us to our destination as the postcode we used on the recce did not take Moira and myself to the desired location.

As the reservoirs are free from currents they offer many water activities such as open-water swimming and dipping sessions as well as water sports like canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing. The site also includes two Sites of Special Scientific Interest that are frequented by overwintering wild fowl and fungi including many species of waxcap. Grass snakes, otters, bats and many bird species also make their home at the reservoir and surrounding woodland.

We left the reservoirs and walked through Nant Fawr Community Woods on our way to Roath Park which was really busy with people enjoying the winter sunshine.

The group photo was taken on the promenade opposite the Captain Scott Memorial prior to an enjoyable lunch at the Terra Nova Lakeside Cafe, followed by a walk around the park’s Botanical Gardens.

As there was no interest in exploring the conservatory hot house, we walked around the lake, finally retracing our route through the Wild Gardens and woodland and back to the reservoirs where we said our farewells and journey’s home.

Thanks from Moira and from yours truly for joining our ‘reservoirs’ walk.

Looking forward to our next WWs adventure!
