St Brides Major and Ogmore Castle, 25 May

Seven Wick Wanderers met at the Ogmore Community Hall at 09:30 to join another 20 walkers for complimentary coffee, before embarking on our walk. We were joining up with Chris Jones who was leading one of his walks. For the “Wales Coastal Path” being part of National Resources Wales.

We headed off shortly after 10am and made our way along the coastal path towards Dunraven. A local historian gave us a talk on the castle, I was surprised at his comment that some Ravens were actually gifted to the tower of London as the first ravens. We left the grounds and headed up to the Mezze pub (old Farmers Arms) passing the Heritage Coast Centre, where we stopped for some refreshments.

Continuing on through St Brides Major village passing St Bridget’s church and passing alongside Southerndown golf course to Ogmore Castle. We were greeted by the late “William de Londres” dressed in his knights’ attire and sword in hand, he accused us of trespassing on his grounds and demanded we leave. (all in good fun).

We gave the stepping stones a miss, headed back along the river, toward the estuary and then around to beach front and to the Community Hall.

We enjoyed a very welcome drink before heading back to Wick. An 8-mile enjoyable walk. A really great day.
